The waiting game was an excruciating one, so they did whatever they could to prepare. They rigged the new safe house and loaded it with weapons and ammunition from their storage unit. It would be their base for this mission, and they hadn’t stepped foot outside it since they’d arrived.

Deacon was putting the final floorboard back in place when Samuel called.

“Hey,” Deacon said quickly, eager for some news—of any kind.

“Hi. Go into the bedroom,” Samuel said tightly, taking Deacon by surprise.

He did as instructed and could only assume this was related to his case—Nicole’s case. He had enough to deal with right now, and he wasn’t sure he could process anything else. He didn’t want to . . .

“I received an alert this morning for Tom Ford,” Samuel said—but he didn’t sound excited about it.

“And?” Deacon asked with a sense of dread.

“I’m sorry, Deacon. The contract has been rescinded. I think they found him. Given how fast it happened, my guess is it was someone Ford knew. Someone he mistakenly trusted.”

The room grew smaller by the second. Now Sonoma truly was his only option.

Deacon’s legs felt weak beneath him and sat on the edge of the bed. “Any sight of Sonoma?”

“No. He could be in New York, or he could be anywhere. I’m doing everything to track him,” Samuel said, and Deacon knew he was.

He tilted his head back, closing his eyes, ignoring the sickening feeling spreading through his veins.

Deacon had no doubt Samuel would find Sonoma, but when? And would it be too late? The man was Deacon’s last chance. His last chance to move forward, and if he lost that, he’d have to live the rest of his life asking himself the same questions over and over and never have a body to bury. He would be stuck in a world of pain he couldn’t let go of and couldn’t move past.

“Thanks, Samuel,” Deacon said quietly.

There was nothing more to say, and Samuel knew him better than to give him a pep talk. Deacon was grateful when Samuel changed the conversation.

“The church is still deserted,” Samuel said. “Maybe we’re wrong—maybe she won’t do the worship service there.”

“She could do it anywhere,” Deacon agreed. How many buildings did the organization own that Marianne didn’t know about? And how did Ariel know about them? Deacon had a very bad feeling about that.

“Any sign of Greene?” Deacon asked, wondering if he would be present for the ceremony, although if he was, Deacon expected him to be there as a spectator. He appeared to be much more of an enabler than an active participant. They all agreed, though, that the child was likely what Ariel had been hiding underneath her poncho. And that likely meant the little girl had been in Greene’s care.

“She has to make a mistake at some point,” Deacon said. She wasn’t trained to be invisible, and now she was with a child. At some point they would have to get a hit on CCTV or some other system, but Deacon feared they would be too late.
